Fire-Based Cremation

The most affordable option, fire-based cremation requires flame-producing heat between 1,500 and 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The cremator consists of two chambers, allowing the combustion process to work in two phases.

Primary Chamber

The initial combustion burns off the non-bone elements and the casket material, converting them to various gases. The organic cremated remains, such as bone fragments, settle in the primary chamber.

Any metals, such as those used for hip replacements, are separated from the bone fragments before the cremated remains are placed in a processor that turns them into ashes.

Secondary Chamber

The initial combustion byproducts, namely carbon gas, could bind with other elements to produce toxic combinations like sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide that are unsafe to release into the atmosphere, so they're moved into the secondary chamber. There, oxygen atoms bind with the carbon atoms to create emission-friendly carbon dioxide, replicating the healthy CO2 you exhale when breathing.

The secondary chamber is basically a catalytic converter and acts as a chamber with baffles so that smoke collides with itself and is combusted. Anything relative to the body or container that surrounds only comes into contact with the primary chamber where it is placed in.

How Long Does Fire-Based Cremation Take?

Fire-based cremations require between 60 minutes and 3 hours to complete. Several factors can affect the duration, including:

    • Body mass
    • Casket type
    • Cremation chamber temperature

All 50 states and U.S. territories permit fire-based cremation.

Water-Based Cremation

Water-based cremation accelerates the body's natural decomposition process through the combined elements of water, alkaline chemicals, heat, agitation and pressure. The remaining bone fragments are referred to as hydrolyzed remains or cremated remains.

The Aquamation or Alkaline Hydrolysis Process

Requiring 1/7 of the energy necessary to complete a fire-based cremation and no fossil fuels, water-based cremations are an environmentally friendly alternative. While it's not currently accepted in all states, some are reviewing the water-based cremation process.

Cremation Society of Washington strictly adheres to the following procedures:

    • Placing the deceased in a steel chamber
    • Filling the chamber with the following alkaline solution
        -- 95% water
        -- 5% potassium hydroxide
    • Heating to approximately 165 degrees Fahrenheit
with a highly pressurized solution to prevent boiling

The solution and pressure break down the body over 4-16 hours, leaving the bone fragments to be finished in the same manner as the traditional fire-based cremation method.
